Understanding Price Terminology

Funeral prices are broken down into three categories, each of which goes into calculating the overall cost of a funeral.  At the conclusion of your arrangement conference with the funeral director, you will be provided a "Statement of Funeral Goods & Services Selected" which outlines each selection your family has made to arrive at the overall cost of the funeral or memorial.

To better help families understand these categories before you come into the funeral home to make arrangements, we've provided explanations below:

Professional Services  include the professional and technical services of our staff, use of our facilities, equipment and full fleet of professional funeral automobiles, along with access to our professional knowledge bank that comes with our firms' collective 100 year-plus history of serving families in Kittitas County.

Merchandise Items are things such as caskets, urns, alternative cremation containers, outer burial containers, memorial stationary, headstones and other tangible goods we sell you.  All merchandise is subject to applicable sales tax.

Cash Advance Items, are things that we procure and/or pay for on your behalf ahead of the service and include on your statement.  These items include items such as certified death certificates ($25 each), cemetery charges (varies by cemetery but typically no less than $1900 minimum for a full burial, $900 minimum for cremation placement), paid obituary notices ($225-$325 each newspaper, depending on length and publication selected), honorariums to pastors and/or musicians (varies widely but averages $300-500), etc.

Under Washington law, our funeral home may not accept a commission, rebate or otherwise add a markup to items disclosed as cash advances.  As such, the items in this category will wind up being exactly what you would pay if you were doing so directly.  However, since the exact amounts of cash advance items (especially obituaries) can be unknown at the time of the arrangement, we will put a good faith estimate on your Statement of Funeral Goods & Services and then send a finalized accounting of this portion of your statement which may include a refund from the funeral home or a small balance due from your family.

The accurate cost of a funeral or memorial is arrived at when the total of all three categories are combined.

Professional Services + Merchandise + Cash Advances = Total Price of Funeral

When comparing pricing between funeral homes or cremation providers, we encourage you to look at the whole picture  and not just the lowest advertised price.  When we provide an estimate to a family inquiring about costs, we are sure to include the median price for merchandise selections as well as the typical cash advances for the type of service you've discussed with us.  However, each funeral is unique and we encourage you to come in to visit with us to make those selections to arrive at the most reasonable estimate possible before the need arises.
