L.A. "Mick" Davies, Sr. Obituary

Lawrence Anthony "Mick" Davies died on June 20, 2022 at his home in Olympia. Mick was born on August 22, 1932 to Lawrence M. and Margaret L. (Stoves) Davies.

He grew up in Roslyn, attended school there and at an early age began helping his dad in the two family businesses - the Roslyn Funeral Home and the Cascade Telephone Company. During his teen years, he joined the Cle Elum Riding Club and participated in rodeo events in Ellensburg and various other towns. Mick graduated high school in 1950. He attended WSU for a year and then joined the Air Force, serving from 1952 to 1956. After boot camp, he was stationed in Rome, NY where he managed the firing range. During this time, he was sent TDY to Denver to train as a Senior Armament Technician.

In 1953, Mick married his high school sweetheart, Sharlene Pays of Cle Elum, and they moved to Albuquerque, NM where he finished his military duty. Two children were born during this time, Cynthia Marie and Lawrence Michael. The family returned home to Roslyn where Mick resumed working with his dad. Son Kenneth Dwayne came along in 1957. In 1958, Mick moved his family to Los Angeles, where he worked and finished his education. Son Jeffrey Dean was born there in 1960.

Mick ultimately landed a job at Aerospace Corporation as an aerospace engineer. His company contracted with NASA and the Air Force in the space program. Mick did thermal studies on the Apollo space craft and was fortunate to meet several of the astronauts at that time. He went on to other duties including computer programming for satellite orbital analysis.

Mick retired in 1993 after 29 years of "playing around with space toys". Two years later, Shar finished her job as instructional aid at the local grade school, and they moved back to upper Kittitas County, living in Nelson Siding and Roslyn. Summers were spent camping at Fish Lake with a family reunion weekend there every year.

Over the years, Mick was a member of the NRA, Cascade Field and Stream Club, St. Thomas Masonic Lodge, Masada Shriners, and RRCE Heritage Club.

Mick is survived by his wife Shar, their four children and their spouses, four grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren. Also surviving is his brother Terry (wife Lu), two nieces, and 2 nephews; eight great nieces and nephews, an numerous great-great nieces and nephews.

If you were to ask Mick to describe his life, he would probably say, "It's been a great ride!"
