Michael Paul Bland

Michael Paul Bland passed away on July 22, 2025 at the age of 82. His passing marks the end of a life that was many things: chaotic, loud, flawed, and unforgettable.

Mike was born in Cle Elum, Washington on September 20, 1943, the son of Les and Ellen Bland. He had two older brothers - Terry and Norman - who preceded him in death. In 1968 Mike started working for the Alaska Marine Highway abord the M/V Wickersham. This brought him to Juneau, Alaska where he met Janet Sloan. They were married in 1969 and had 2 daughters. Mike worked for Alascom as a marine operator for 25 years before retiring and moving back to Roslyn to be closer to his mom.

He struggled with addiction for much of his life. Alcohol was often louder than the people who loved him — and still, many of us loved him anyway. He found sobriety and took great pride in helping others on their journey to become sober.

He loved his AA community, loved to cook, and he loved going to the casino with friends. He loved Old Fashioned Sour Cream Cake Doughnuts, a thick chocolate shake and he could tell a story like no one else. Sometimes he was the punchline. Sometimes he was the hero. Often, he was both.

He leaves behind his two daughters - Liesl Bland and Stella (Wes) Keller; grandchildren Kira Keller, Ayla Keller, Jax Keller, Lincoln Keller and Lanxton Keller and likely a few people still trying to forgive him, or understand him, or both.
