Kay Ann Miles, 80, of Ellensburg, passed away on Sunday, February 22, 2026.
Kay was born on August 24, 1945 in Hutchinson, Kansas to W. Joe and Patricia (Skog) Lindgren. Shortly after she was born, the family moved to Valier, Montana before eventually moving west and settling down in the Sacramento area. Kay attended school in Sacramento and graduated from high school there.
Following graduation, she moved to Seattle where she went to work as an insurance rate clerk. She met Doug Miles at the Town & Country Dance Club where they were both taking ballroom dance lessons. They eventually began dating and were married in August 1977.
Kay was a talented seamstress and loved to sew, even handcrafting her wedding dress. She attended many classes in the drama and theatre department at Central Washington University where she also worked in the costume shop helping with set design, costumes, and props. She spent roughly 17 years as both a student and employee at CWU.
Kay was dedicated to many social service organizations over the years and served on the boards of the Kittitas County CASA program, the Kittitas County Crisis Line and Central Washington Disability Resources.
Kay also dedicated many hours to the Girl Scouts as an Assistant Girl Scout leader where she specialized in training other leaders in the program. She was very adept in the realm of teaching outdoor skills. She was a genius at improvising and making do with what was available when it came to situations that may arise at campouts or other outdoor Girl Scout activities. She was a talented photographer who had a real talent for capturing the essence of the moment being photographed. Her talents were noticed by her Girl Scout peers and she was selected to be the official photographer for the Girl Scout Round Up at Farragut State Park in Bayview, Idaho in both 1986 and 1993.
In retirement, Kay and Doug spent lots of time traveling. In addition to their timeshare in Hawaii, they also traveled to Spain, Peru (where they visited Machu Picchu), Malta, Sicily, the Canary Islands as well as a couple cruises – one to Cuba and another through Central America with stops in Belize, Guatemala, Honduras, Costa Rica that also took them through the Panama Canal.
Kay is survived by her husband, Doug Miles, at their home in Ellensburg; brother Laurie Lindgren of Idaho; step-mother Lorraine Lindgren and step-siblings Albert Alcorn and Rayna Fry of California; as well as Doug’s extended family.
Memorial contributions in Kay’s honor are suggested to CASA, Central Washington Disability Resources or to the Crisis Line c/o Aspen Victim Advocacy Services.
