James Cruse

September 8, 1951 — September 6, 2026

Ellensburg, Washington

James “Jim” Cruse, 74, passed unexpectedly in his sleep on Sunday, September 6, 2026. A celebration of Jim’s life will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Monday, September 14, 2026 at the Red Horse Diner in Ellensburg. He will be laid to rest in a private ceremony at the IOOF Cemetery.

Jim was born on September 8, 1951 in Ellensburg, Washington, the third of four children born to Willard “Bill” Cruse and Margaret (Price) Cruse. He spent his childhood years in Ellensburg, graduating from Ellensburg High School in 1970. He attended YVC and was a projectionist at the Ellen Drive-In and the Liberty Theater until he moved to Bellevue, Washington, in 1975. He began his career with the City of Bellevue in the Structural Maintenance Department shortly thereafter, retiring in 2011.

Jim met Kathy Stepp through a mutual friend in 1980 and they married in May of 1981. Their son, Derek, was born in 1984. Jim, Kathy, and Derek lived in Kirkland, Washington until May of 2012, when Jim and Kathy moved to Ellensburg. Derek relocated to Kittitas in 2013.

Above all else, Jim was a family man whose life revolved around those he loved. He was quick with a smile, always ready to lend a helping hand, and never passed up an opportunity to poke a little fun. He loved deeply and laughed easily and often.

Jim will be deeply missed by his loving wife Kathy; son Derek and daughter-in-law Rebecca; granddaughters Wren and Camille; siblings Loraine (Bob) Bridenback, Billy Cruse and Leroy Cruse; and many lifelong friends. He leaves behind a world made better by his smile.

Memorial contributions in Jim’s honor are suggested to your local food bank.
