Anthony “Tony” L Jovanovich, a devoted educator, proud Croatian American, and lifelong resident of Washington State, passed away peacefully on June 5, 2026, at the Malibu House in South Cle Elum. He was 93 years old.
Tony was born on June 26, 1932, in Roslyn, Washington, to Fred and Mary Jovanovich. Raised in a large and lively family alongside his seven siblings, he was rooted in strong values shaped by his Croatian heritage. Those early years in Roslyn instilled in him a deep appreciation for community, tradition, and hard work.
As a young boy, Tony moved to the Seattle area, where he graduated from high school in 1950. He briefly worked at Sears before answering the call to serve his country, volunteering to join the United States Army. Tony was stationed primarily in Japan, where he served as a Radio Operator, skillfully sending Morse code messages. His service reflected his discipline, focus, and sense of duty. He was honorably discharged in 1954.
After returning home, Tony pursued higher education at Central Washington University, earning a degree in Education. He went on to become a dedicated teacher, instructing students in woodshop, welding, and driver’s education. Known for being both demanding and deeply caring, Tony left a lasting impression on his students, who remember him as a mentor who inspired discipline, resilience, and pride in one’s work.
Outside the classroom, Tony embraced life with enthusiasm. He was known for his love of polka dancing, often taking any opportunity to enjoy the music. He found joy in gardening, woodworking, building, camping and time at the cabin he had built—always happiest when working with his hands or spending time outdoors. He also remained engaged with the world, keeping up on current events and sharing stories that reflected his rich life experiences. Tony was a regular volunteer and attendee of the Renton Croatian Picnic.
Tony cherished the time he spent with his loved ones. He married Betty Ann Pavlich, and together they built a family grounded in love, support, and shared traditions. He is survived by his children: Michael (Nancy) Foley, Theresa Ozbolt, Lisa (Nathan) Weis, and Rod (Aleithea) Jovanovich; six grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. His family remembers him as a steady presence—strong, hardworking, and always willing to lend guidance or share a story. Tony’s legacy lives on in the countless students he mentored, the skills he passed on, and the values he instilled in both his family and community.
Memorial contributions in Tony’s honor are suggested to the Ronald Community Club, PO Box 249, Roslyn, WA 98941 or to the Roslyn-Ronald-Cle Elum Heritage Club, PO Box 916, Cle Elum, WA 98922.
Tony will be deeply missed and forever remembered for a life well lived, guided by purpose, firm hand shakes, perseverance, and heart.
A graveside service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, June 30, 2026 at the Roslyn Veteran Cemetery.
